Bronco bombshell as Roosters recruitment questioned

The Brisbane Broncos have been rocked by the sudden resignation of assistant coach Ben Te’o following a series of heated altercations with head coach Michael Maguire.
While the club has yet to make a formal announcement, sources close to the situation confirm Te’o handed in his notice this morning, leaving the Broncos’ defensive structures in disarray just four weeks into the NRL season.
The fallout reportedly stems from a "blazing row" during a coaching staff dinner in Melbourne last Thursday, ahead of the Broncos’ victory over the Storm. Maguire is said to have pointed the finger at Te’o for defensive lapses in the opening rounds, a move the former premiership-winning forward did not take lightly.
“Ben stands up for what he believes in,” the Rugby League Insider team noted during today’s episode. “He obviously didn’t accept what Michael Maguire was saying. They’ve had words, and it’s finished pretty ugly.”
Despite a peace-pipe meeting called by General Manager of Football Troy Thompson at Red Hill on Monday, the relationship proved beyond repair. A second verbal altercation occurred, leading to Te’o’s decision to walk away from a four-year contract.
A History of Friction
The tension between the pair is not a recent development. Te’o played under Maguire during South Sydney’s 2014 drought-breaking premiership, but the relationship was often strained by Maguire’s intense, "million miles an hour" coaching style.
An old anecdote from their time at the Rabbitohs resurfaced today, perfectly capturing the personality clash. Maguire would often demand his forwards be "wild dogs" on the field, to which Te’o famously retorted to teammates: “He wants us to be wild dogs on the weekend, and then he wants us to be guide dogs when we’ve got a day off. Where’s the balance?”
Roosters Recruitment Under Fire
The Broncos aren’t the only heavyweight facing scrutiny. The Sydney Roosters find themselves in the spotlight for a rare string of recruitment failures and a defensive slump that has seen them leak 100 points in just three games.
Critics have pointed to the signing of Brandon Smith and the loss of Joseph Suaalii as "genuine errors" in judgement. Despite a roster stacked with representative stars like James Tedesco and Daly Cherry-Evans, the Roosters currently lead the league in penalties conceded and total errors.
“They have a habit where they see a shiny thing and they want to have it,” the panel discussed. “It’s almost like a power play to show they can get the signature, even if it’s not what the system needs.”
Looking Ahead
The timing could not be worse for Brisbane as they prepare for Friday night’s "Battle of Brisbane" against the Dolphins. With Payne Haas expected to miss the clash due to an AC shoulder injury, the loss of a key defensive coach adds a layer of instability the club can ill afford.
While Te’o is expected to be snapped up quickly by a rival club—with a return to South Sydney under Wayne Bennett cited as a logical destination—the Broncos must now find a way to silence the noise and prove that Maguire’s methods can still deliver results without alienating his staff.
