Niche rule puts young stars on the market

A raft of young NRL stars are soon to be unleashed onto the open transfer market as one of the NRL's more niche rules comes into effect.
Under the regulation, young players in the final year of their deals cannot engage with other teams until either Round 6 or after five senior appearances across NRL, NSW Cup or Queensland Cup.
For the opening month of the season, that restriction effectively locked away some of the game’s most promising youngsters. Now, as Round 6 arrives, the door swings open — and clubs are ready to pounce.
Leading the charge is Brisbane prospect Phillip Coates, the younger brother of Melbourne flyer Xavier, who is expected to attract immediate interest from both the Broncos and the incoming PNG Chiefs.
Coates headlines a group of emerging players set to ignite the lower end of the player market, alongside Sydney Roosters teenage centre Lui Lee, brother of former Queensland representative Brenko Lee.
The PNG Chiefs, building towards their inaugural squad, are looming as a major disruptor. They have already shown interest in Coates and are also monitoring Brisbane back-rower Jared Horne, a highly touted schoolboy talent with Junior Kumuls experience - making him a natural fit for the new franchise.
Beyond the headline names, several under-the-radar prospects are also expected to draw attention.
Manly young gun Sifa Oldfield, last year’s Jake Trbojevic Junior Representative Player of the Year, continues to rise through the ranks and has already spent time training with the Sea Eagles’ NRL squad.
Teammate Khyanu Mahon, a Central Coast product, is also now free to negotiate after completing a full pre-season with Manly’s top side.
South Sydney forward Anthony Mailangi, one of the standout performers in this year’s Harold Matthews competition, is another set to come into focus, while Wests Tigers back-rower Mitchell Taotua looms as a player in demand.
Taotua has already featured in NSW Cup this season, but with the Tigers boasting strong depth in the back row, rival clubs are expected to test his availability as he searches for a clearer pathway to the NRL.
