Sean O'Sullivan on Madge doubters & Round 2 referee memo

In the latest episode of the Kenty Blitz podcast, guest host Sean O’Sullivan from the Canterbury Bulldogs joins Warren Livingstone to dive into the Mitch Barnett signing saga, the NRL's new tactical memos to clubs, and a comprehensive look-ahead to a massive Round 2 of the 2026 season.

The Mitch Barnett bidding war

The show kicked off with the breaking news that the Brisbane Broncos have officially snared Warriors and Origin enforcer Mitch Barnett on a two-year deal. Despite reports of a higher offer from the Parramatta Eels, Brisbane’s inclusion of a third-year option proved to be the "kicker" that sealed the deal. O’Sullivan, who has played against Barnett, noted that the prop has taken his game to a "whole other level" since his move to the Warriors and described him as the perfect replacement for the departing Payne Haas. "Reece Walsh will be very happy to have a world-class front-rower coming there to protect him," O’Sullivan remarked.

The refereeing 'memom & faster footy

The discussion then moved to the NRL’s latest directive to officials and clubs. O’Sullivan confirmed that every club received a memo prior to the weekend outlining a "lockdown" on specific rules, particularly regarding the two-handed kick-pressure rule and the transition of 20-meter penalties into six-again restarts. While the panel noted the NRL's desire for cleaner games, O’Sullivan highlighted the difficulty for players. "It’s second-hand memory... it’s going to be an adjustment," he said. He argued that the new "six-to-go" rule from the 20-meter line would make the game even faster by removing the "stoppages where halves can go talk about what sets they want to run".

Madge silences the doubters

The boys also defended Broncos coach Michael Maguire following recent media scrutiny regarding his intense training methods. O'Sullivan, a two-time Premiership winner himself, was quick to shut down the criticism. "Success also has a toll... to win, sometimes you have to push your body and your mind to its limits," he said.

Both agreed the "proof is in the pudding" with Maguire's track record, and O'Sullivan shared that the Brisbane playing group remains extremely happy despite the outside noise, suggesting they might even use the "crackdown" narrative as motivation for their upcoming clash with the Eels.

Round 2 Preview: The 'hybrid' halfback era

To close the show, the hosts turned their attention to the weekend's blockbuster matchups, focusing on the tactical shift toward "running halves." Looking at Dylan Brown and Kalin Ponga’s Round 1 masterclass, O’Sullivan discussed the "hybrid" idea where traditional game managers are being replaced by elite athletes who play with "deception and tempo". Ahead of the Roosters vs. Souths grudge match, the panel highlighted the "lethal" Rabbitohs left edge of Cody Walker, David Fifita, and Latrell Mitchell. While the Roosters are under pressure after a Round 1 "steamrolling," O’Sullivan warned against betting against a Trent Robinson-led side, noting Robinson is a "deep thinker" who often uses early-season losses to refine the team's long-term chemistry.
