The Cronulla Sharks will look to carry the momentum from their dominant 50-point opening-round victory into Sunday’s showdown with an in form Penrith Panthers in Bathurst.
Halfback Braydon Trindall credited a team effort for their impressive start to the season and said his own performance came from being in peak condition following pre-season preparation.
“Getting so close to that Grand Final last year and just not wanting to let the boys coming back in not good condition,” Trindall said. “Wanting to be a part of something bigger, really having that push to make the GF, makes you more hungry, I guess. Makes the whole team want it a little bit more.”
Trindall also highlighted the growing combination with his halves partner Nicho Hynes, noting the importance of building synergy over time.
“We’ve played a fair few games together now; it was all about getting some game time playing each other and getting that combination to actually work,” he said. “It’s been a couple of years in building that and I think it’s just going to get better and better. The more games you play, the more you know each other’s games, working out little things and little details in each other’s games.”
Trindall said another strong performance against the Panthers would be a confidence booster for the Sharks. “Penrith are always a very strong side. It’s going to be another good week of prep for us, going to Bathurst and getting into battle.”
Fullback Will Kennedy said returning to Bathurst for the clash had special significance.
“When I saw the game in Bathurst last year, all the family were cheering, so I had that one circled. It’s exciting and I’m keen to get back there,” he said. “That’s where it all started - Bathurst St Pats - it’s good to go back there and see all my mates, and where my footy began as well.”
Kennedy also reflected on his early days in the game and the influence of his family. “I was the ballboy for Bathurst Panthers. Coming up playing through the grades, it was good to watch Div 10 footy there — bush footy, a different kind of footy, but good to watch.”
On the field, Kennedy said the Sharks would focus on executing their game plan and building on their spine combinations. “When we’re playing our best footy, we’re focused on us and what we do — our connection and doing those things well. That comes out against those big sides and playing big games. We want to focus on that and play Sharks footy. Any team you play in the NRL you don’t know what to expect. It will be a big game for us this weekend, we’re very excited.”
Kennedy also touched on personal matters, including contract negotiations, hinting at flexibility but emphasising that football remains the priority. “We all can’t stay here. I’ve got to do what’s best for my family, doing that and focus on my footy is the main thing. My management’s had chats with the club.”
With a fired-up spine and growing combinations, the Sharks will be looking to translate their dominant Round 1 performance into another statement win against the Panthers in Bathurst.
