The Jake Friend Redemption Story - From Sacked Player to Triple Premiership Legend

In the latest episode of Chiming In, former Sydney Roosters hooker Jake Friend delivers a candid and deeply personal account of the turbulent early years that very nearly ended his career before it had properly begun. What unfolds is not simply a football story, but one of accountability, humility and long-term growth.
Early Promise, Early urbulence
Friend moved from Noosa to Sydney at just 16 to join the Roosters system, leaving home as a teenager to pursue his NRL dream. He lived with a local family who provided stability and support, remaining in his corner throughout his career. But his early years in first grade were overshadowed by off-field incidents that placed his future in serious doubt.
A drink-driving charge in 2009 and an assault allegation that was later dropped after video footage cleared him put him under intense scrutiny. Then, following a verbal altercation after a night out, the NRL applied significant pressure on the Roosters to act. In December 2009, his contract was terminated.
Washing Dishes and Rebuilding Trust
Suddenly without a club and his reputation damaged, Friend found himself back at square one. He took work as a kitchen hand and dishwasher at a café, earning just over $400 a week. Away from the spotlight, he trained relentlessly, determined to prove he was worthy of another opportunity.
In an effort to rebuild trust, he wrote a heartfelt letter to the Roosters board. The sincerity of that apology reportedly moved several board members to tears. The club ultimately made the decision to reinstate him, giving him the second chance that would define the rest of his career.
Premierships and Leadership
What followed was one of the great redemption arcs of the modern NRL era. Friend became a cornerstone of the Roosters’ forward pack, winning premierships in 2013, 2018 and 2019. He served as co-captain and earned representative honours for Queensland and Australia, transforming from a young player on the brink to one of the most respected figures at the club.
Life After Football
Friend retired in 2021 after a series of concussions, explaining the decision was driven by long-term health and the desire to be present for his partner and young children.
Since stepping away from the game, he has transitioned successfully into business, founding Friendly Plumbing, which now employs 16 staff and operates eight service trucks. He also continues to mentor young players through the Roosters academy, helping guide the next generation through the pressures he once faced.
