The real reason Haas left BNE, Benji's blow-up & Ponga's eligibility debate

In the latest episode of the Rugby League Insider podcast, James "Hoops" Hooper, Darcy Macdonald and Brandon Savage dive into Benji's coaching on a new Tigers YouTube clip, Ponga's eligibility debate and the truth about Madge and Payne.
Marshall’s hardline approach at Tiger Town
The show kicked off with a look at the Wests Tigers’ new era under club legend Benji Marshall. After a number of wooden spoons, the side clawed its way off the bottom of the ladder last year and has released footage of Marshall setting a uncompromising standard for the playing group. Hooper praised the directness of the rookie coach, noting it was a refreshing change for a club that has lacked direction.
Marshall’s message to the squad was blunt and delivered with what Hooper described as "both barrels." During the session, Marshall issued an ultimatum that has since gone viral: "If you don’t buy into what we’re selling here, there’s the fucking door".
While Macdonald noted this was a strong "PR piece" for Marshall’s image as a coach.
There's sometimes been knocks on him that he's too soft, remember there was that whole thing about him taking a holiday during the season," she said. "That YouTube piece shows that he means busines."
The Tigers now have an opportunity to "walk the walk" when they face the Cowboys at Leichhardt Oval.
The Ponga eligibility debate
The discussion then moved to the international stage following Kalyn Ponga’s decision to pledge his allegiance to the New Zealand Kiwis. Despite Ponga being a stalwart for the Queensland Maroons, Macdonald argued that the move should be welcomed rather than criticised.
"I want him to be proud to pull on his Queensland jersey and then proud to pull on a Kiwi jersey", Macdonald said, defending the current eligibility rules that allow players to honour their heritage while still competing in State of Origin.
Touching on the new State Of Origin criteria, Hoops said, "If you listen to Kalyn and his family, they're proud Kiwi's."
"He's one of those kids, and there's a number of them out there, who does qualify."
The panel concluded that allowing elite stars like Ponga to strengthen the international game without sacrificing their Origin careers is the "sweet spot" for the sport's growth.
Wednesday Wind Up: The truth about 'Madge & Pain'
The centrepiece of the episode was Hooper’s "Wednesday Windup," a new segment where he launched a blistering attack on the official narrative surrounding Payne Haas’s departure from the Brisbane Broncos to join South Sydney. Hooper was quick to dismiss the "happy families" image being projected by the Brisbane front office.
"Forget the BS happy families PR spin that’s coming out of the Broncos. Payne’s decision to join South Sydney tells us everything we need to know", Hooper declared. He argued that Haas’s exit is a direct result of the "militant training regime" of coach Michael Maguire. While acknowledging that Maguire "knows what winning looks like," Hooper suggested his intense methods have a clear "shelf life."

Parramatta’s search for steel
To close the show, the hosts turned their attention to the Parramatta Eels, following their demoralising loss to the Melbourne Storm. Macdonald urged the Eels administration to stop "pontificating" and go "all in" on signing Warriors forward Mitch Barnett to fix their defensive frailties.
The panel agreed that the Eels lack the "steely edge" required to compete with the top tier clubs. Hooper noted that while Jase Ryles is a promising coach, the club needs to follow the lead of "ruthless" operators like Gus Gould or the Roosters’ management by identifying a target and closing the deal quickly to save their season.
